There have been many rumours regarding the collaborative product but recent official talk about the bikes is that the price-tag of the motorcycle will be over one lakh INR. The range of street bikes will feature engines of capacity 125cc and more. The launch is somehow definite in the cities of Europe by the end of this year and the welcome season of 2011 will be the time for India to host some launches from the team. Bikes will be sold through Bajaj Autos Pro-Biking showrooms.

It is news that the first launch from Bajaj-KTM will have a price tag of Rs1, 00,000. But not sure whether that bike will have an engine of 125cc or over 200cc. That shall continue remaining mystery for we people. Hope to see much powerful and superior bikes over those which we have we have already available in the market these days.

Another news from the team is that they are going to launch a series of imported bikes from KTM in Indian market in the upcoming years. This will definitely boost competition with Kawasaki which is looking to launch powered bikes in Indian market. The only similarity between Kawasaki and KTM will be the partner Bajaj Autos, India.

ZMR

R15

Let me put an end to the battle at the start itself. The best bike between ZMR and R15 is R15. But wait… given a choice to BUY a bike I would buy the ZMR. So where does the ZMR score better? Read on.

Looks

Both bikes are good lookers. But R15 is a class apart. It is a bike designed at one shot compared to the ZMR which evolved from the classic Karizma. Hence the R15 looks purposeful whereas ZMR is fanciful. R-Series styling is spot on. The Delta-box chassis suits a fully faired bike and mono-shock rear adds more juice. Relatively, the ZMR looks more fancy – a sort of hayabusiness with larger proportions. So the ZMR has better street presence whereas the R15 is extremely smart. Comparing pictures of ZMR and R15 side by side, the R15 wins hands down. But compare them on road, the ZMR’s larger proportions does make you look good enough. But, both bikes don’t have a graceful butt though

Engine

Here comes the biggest difference. A tuned 150cc Vs relaxed 223cc. Both the bikes have extremely refined engines, deliver great power and are fuel injected. However the greatest difference is how they deliver power. The difference is visible in the specs:

R15: 17bhp@8500rpm, 15Nm@7500rpm

ZMR: 17.6bhp@7000rpm, 18.7Nm@6000rpm

The ZMR is around 20kg heavier so the higher torque and power are offset, but the difference is the 1500rpm difference between the two engines. In real world this makes a lot of a difference for the normal biker. In the R15 you have to wrung out pace like a racer, whereas the ZMR is a lot sedate in its power spread. So for the discerning rider, the ZMR will feel a lot faster. A proper biker would like the R15 as this is how sports bike behaves. You need to hold bikes like R15 in the power band. In contrast the ZMR is designed as a tourer for Indian conditions – Its heavy, extremely reliable, looks big and has power at lower revs. If you look closely why bullets are preferred for touring, you’ll see that power and torque peaks for a bullet as low as 2000-3000 rpm. Power at lower rpm has several advantages – a more relaxed engine, and a better drivability.

Handling

R15 wins hands down on a track. Delta box and a link type monocross suspension is way ahead compared to the ZMR. One can never catch R15 on a racing track. But on city roads the ZMR is as good as the R15.

Fuel Efficiency

Both bikes are equally good. The R15 might deliver slightly better mileage with careful driving.

Verdict

Overall the R15 is a great bike and boasts best in class technology. It looks amazing as well. The ZMR on the other hand is an evolution. ZMR appends fuel injection, disc brakes and better styling to the Karizma. At the start of the blog I had mentioned I would buy a ZMR over the R15 mainly due to the way the bike delivers power at lower revs. Personally I don’t prefer to screw the engine hard to extract performance as I wont be using the bike on track. Also, when touring a 223cc bike delivering roughly the same power, better torque and more heavy weight than a 150cc is better suited. Also within city, the ZMR has better performance and good street presence. So technically the R15 is a better bike, but if you prefer power delivery as per my taste, the ZMR is the one.

One line Verdict: Technically R15 wins, but the old wine in new bottle kicks

Honda has just announced a new CBR600RR for 2010. The 2010 motorcycle appears to be an evolution of the 2009 and clearly with bold new graphics. The bike includes some braking performance improvements as well. This is part of American Honda Motor Company's Powersports Division announced today and is the third new release of 2010 motorcycle models. This on-road motorcycle release follows the earlier announcements of Honda's 2010 Fury, scooters, dirt bikes and ATVs.

"We are very excited about announcing these four street bikes for 2010," said Powersports Press Manager Bill Savino. "Within this mix we have a new cruiser, a new lightweight touring bike and two CBR sport bikes. The cruiser offers a whole new look for Honda, our new touring bike delivers lightweight, nimble handling, a stylish fairing plus saddlebags for the long haul or daily commute. The CBRs continue to set the standards of performance for the full-on sporting genre. This sets the stage for a great year in 2010 and there will be additional street model announcements later this fall."

Over the years, no other 600cc machine has won more magazine comparisons and AMA championships than Honda's CBR600RR. Traditionally this motorcycle has offered a likable balance of power and handling. The new CBR600RR claims to blend a light and compact chassis with impeccable power delivery for a combination that is set to live-up to past expectations. The motorcycle will also be available with Honda's unique Combined ABS for the pinnacle of middleweight sportbike braking performance.

The 2010 CBR600RR will be available is pearl orange/black and "leyla"; the new special custom graphic. The C-ABS model will be available in red/black only. Dealer availability and MSRP is yet to be determined.

Honda brings a flex-fuel motorcycle to the market with its CG150 TITAN MIX ES. Honda claims the small-displacement motorcycle’s Mix Fuel Injection System makes the new model the “first motorcycle in the world to be equipped with flexible-fuel technology.”

The flex-fuel moniker will allow the new TITAN to take advantage of bio-ethanol fuels. And in Brazil this is significant, as the South American nation is a world leader in utilizing bio-fuel to supplement gasoline for transportation energy. Honda cites “approximately 90% “ of new cars in Brazil sport flex-fuel technology.

Brazil’s bio-ethanol fuel is made by harvesting sugar cane. Touted by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s ethanol industry has been both praised and criticized. Supporters point to job creation and energy independence from ethanol, meanwhile critics say the use of food sources for fuel leads to rising food costs.

The CG150 TITAN MIX ES will be sold in Brazil by Honda subsidiary Moto Honda da Amazonia Ltda, and the Japanese giant expects 200,000 units sold annually. Honda is a juggernaut in the Brazilian motorcycle market, the Japanese firm accounting for 1.326 million of the 1.91 million new motorcycle registrations in 2008.

The TITAN is expected in Brazilian dealerships by the end of March with an MSRP of 6340 Real ($2,700).

Looks

The new curvy look that the Honda Twister possesses gives it a real cool commuter bike look. We are thankful that Honda decided to give it a mini-CB 1000R look. It is nowhere the typical design of the Honda Unicorn.

Aesthetics

The styling provided is definitely a head turner and includes good paint quality, well-fitting panels that are sturdy to not start rattling pretty soon. The double-cradle diamond type frame is well-balanced and in combination with optimized suspension and alloy wheels makes it a smooth ride. German giant Audi India has reported six fold raise in the sales for July 2008 compared to July 2007. The industry has sold more than 125 cars this month compared to 20 cars during the same period last year.

Growing sales put at 595 cars for January-July months, over double of sales during the similar period 2007 at 226 cars, Audi India said in the statement.

Audi & Volkswagen Cuts Prices of Their Models

German luxury car manufacturers Audi and Volkswagen announced to cut the prices of products by up to Rs to Rs 2.79 lacs and Rs 80,859 respectively. They made this declaration after the government’s reduction in a CenVAT by 4%.

Audi has cut the prices of its luxury sedans Audi A8, A6 and A4 by Rs 2.79 lacs, Rs 1.51 lacs and Rs 1.21 lacs, while the Audi’s SUV Q7 is cheaper by Rs 1.85 lacs.

Similarly, Volkswagen has cut the prices of Jetta between Rs 46086 and Rs 57814.

The Passat is cheaper by Rs 75,674 to Rs 80,859 in India.

Despite of a slowdown in the auto industry, Audi (German luxury car manufacturer) is planning to launch its latest SUV “Q5″ in India in a June month.

The only SUV in India from our stable is Q7, which is doing extremely good even in the present situation. But still some people prefer a smaller SUV and because of this, we have decided to offer Q5 in the Indian market.

The rumor is about that Kawasaki intends to update the Z1000 for the 2010 model line up. No facts yet on what the bike have technically, but good rumor doesn’t have a concept photo? Moto Revue have whipped up a little photoshop diddy of what they hope the bike will look like.

While looking more like a Yamaha (not that there’s anything wrong with that), the concept looks very sharp. If the final Z1000 looks anything like this, we might have to persuade Kawasaki to let us borrow one for a while.

Honda 250cc bike to be called KYZ

You must have read in our earlier post that Honda is planning to launch a 250cc with a next few months in India. For our readers we have a few bits of more info regarding this bike, not much but we thought to share whatever info we get with our readers.

The first info which we have is that this bike would be called KYZ and the second and most important information is that this bike would be priced around Yamaha’s YZF R15! Well if Honda can price this bike around R15 then this will take the motorcycle by storm. Anything around 1 lakh for a 250cc bike is very competitive and good in all aspects.

If this happens then this bike will surely kick every other bike from the premium segment giving direct competition to the Ninjas, ZMR and Pulsar200 and Yamaha’s R15.

Another good news for the bike enthusiasts in India, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is planning to launch a 250cc motorcycle in India in the next few months.

As per the sources, the R&D work on the bike is complete and the model will come into trial production in the next three months.

The only offering in the 250cc segment currently is Bajaj-Kawasaki Ninja 250R which is far beyond the reach of many of us when it comes to its price. This segment is least exploited in our country and if Honda could price this 250cc bike competitively then this could turn out to be a real delight for the end users as well as the company.

The good news is that the bike is expected to be priced around 1.5 lakh which I think is really competitive for a 250cc bike in India. The bike is expected to be launched around Diwali to make use of the festive season around that time of the year.

The rest of the techincal details for the 250cc bike are not known for now but we will keep our users updated as n when we have it with us.

But this is not all for the bike lovers in our country. If powerful bikes are not your cup of tea then here is what might excite you. Honda is also planning to bring in the upgraded version of their 125cc Shine and 150cc Unicorn before the entry of 250cc bike. This means that the upgraded versions of Shine and Unicorn are expected to arrive much earlier.

Honda also has its 110cc CB Twister ready for the debut which is expected to attract many buyers because of its features.

With bike offerings ranging from 110cc CB twister to a 250cc bike, it looks that Honda is in no mood to let the other bike manufacturers dominate in the country in the year 2010.

There’s been a lot of talk in the auto industry lately about electric cars, and moving to fully electric platforms. Quietly, motorcycle companies have seen the writing on the wall, and have been exploring electric two-wheel applications for new models. KTM has promised to bring an electric bike by this time in 2010, and Quantya has an electric dirt bike, the Strada already available for purchase.

Not to be left out on this one, Honda has announced that it has partnered with Yuasa to bring an electric bike line-up to their model range by the year 2010.

“Honda is currently developing a battery-powered electric motorcycle which emits no CO2 during operation. The company is aiming to introduce this electric motorcycle to the market about in two years from now,” says Takeo Fukui, Chairman and CEO of Honda Motor Co. “History shows that motorcycles remain strong in a difficult market environment and have always supported Honda in difficult times,” he adds.

Yuasa, maker of most motorcycle batteries (check yours), will be responsible for the development of the high-performance lithium-ion batteries necessary for the electric motorcycles. The two companies will jointly set up a research and development center, and a battery manufacturing facility near Kyoto in Japan. This joint venture is being funded to the tune of $18.5 million, with Honda holding a 49% stake in the company, and the rest being held by Yuasa.

Victory on the fourth stage went once again to Marc Coma (Repsol KTM) 1’17 ahead of Cyril Despres (Red Bull KTM) with the American Jonah Street (KTM) third (at 1’21).

Overall Marc increases his lead to 42’57 ahead of new second place man Street with Fretigne third (at 43’42). Jordi Viladoms (Repsol KTM) is fourth (at 55’57) with Cyril moving up to 11th (at 1h37’07). After yesterday’s crash Alain Duclos went better today to finish 16th on the special 26’44 behind the winner.

After three very fast days the race changed pace today with the terrain being more varied and technical. We still haven’t seen any dunes yet but the tracks were sandy and a pleasure to ride. My goal today was just to ride at a steady pace and maintain my lead. I opted to use a mousse but Jordi was right behind me with a tube so it wasn’t too much stress.

I can’t tell you what a pleasure it was to have a trouble free run. The tracks were really nice and I even managed to forget how far behind I am overall. I started in 47th place this morning and overtook about 40 bikes, and obviously that takes a little time, so to finish just behind Marc isn’t too bad. Now we have to work at getting some time back. I am perhaps the only person in the bivouac who believes I can still win – but it was pretty much like that in 2007 and that it didn’t work out too badly!

I didn’t push too much today, just rode my own race. The terrain was fun and I enjoyed myself – all I had to do was make sure I stayed out of trouble, didn’t puncture my tube and be there for Marc if he needed me.

I slept last night in the medical tent and although I felt stiff this morning I decided to try and ride. In the end I was glad I did. I couldn’t sit down and wasn’t too strong in right hand corners but I could ride ok and didn’t finish too badly. It don’t think I will be 100% tomorrow but the good news is that I will start in the good group and won’t have to eat too much dust.

The 2010 Kawasaki Versys has a new design and some updated technical innovations that reflect the agility and fun of this sports bike. In the US, the 2010 CBR600RR will be available in a pearl a orange/black color scheme, the “Leyla” custom graphic scheme, and the C-ABS model will be available in red/black livery only. Across the pond in Europe, the CBR600RR will get tri-color retro HRC racing livery, similar to the Fireblade.

Dealer availability and the MSRP of the 2010 CBR600RR has yet to be determined, but it isn’t expected to change significantly, if at all.

The next generation of K Series BMW motorcycles has upped displacement to 1293cc.

Are you the type of guy whose idea of a Sunday ride consists of a ‘quick jaunt’ from L.A. to San Francisco or New York to North Carolina? Even better yet, from Germany to France? And do you have the need to do these trips with speed on your side, covering a lot of ground in a little time? If you answered ‘No’ to these questions, there’s probably not much need to read any further. But if you answered ‘Yes’, then BMW may just have the bike for you. Actually, it may have two bikes for you - the 2009 K1300S and K1300GT.
BMW K1300S

Starting with the more-sporty of the updated K-bikes, the first thing you notice when laying an eye on the new Beemer is, well, there's not much more than a different sticker on the tail section. Add a couple new colors and to the average Joe this would be all that separates new from old. But while it may look almost identical to the 1200S it replaces, the Germans focused their efforts on helping the 1300cc Inline-Four in other, more internal areas.

In a focus change for BMW, it has placed the U.S. as their highest ranking market segment worldwide, and made updates to these machines as a direct result of customer and journalist feedback on the previous edition. Listen to the consumers? What a concept…

The fully-faired BMW K1300S is a road-going BMW sportbike, with Beemer traits like heated grips, shaft drive and multiple electronic amenities.
What were the main areas of concern? Fuel injection, suspension feedback and transmission. And this is exactly what BMW Motorcycles aimed to improve.
The massive mechanical-valve exhaust canister has been shortened quite a bit, but for emissions and sound reasons it’s still large and quells the in the Inline-Four’s howl to not much more than a loud sewing machine. BMW sells an Akrapovic exhaust that would quickly remedy this.

Once under way it’s impossible not to be drawn in by the massive amount of torque the lump pumps out, quickly testing the lengths your right wrist is willing to take you. Twist the throttle and the acceleration and speed are nearly endless. Equally as impressive as the tree-stump-pulling grunt is the smoothness at which it is delivered. From 2000rpm all the way up to redline, the BMW pulls like a diesel truck. Every last one of those claimed 103 lb-ft of torque are right there for you to use, all with effortless ease.

This extra snort is the direct result of the revised powerplant. Starting up front, all-new ram-air ducting feeds into an updated airbox and new air filter. Clean air is then pushed through a revised cylinder head, designed to promote swirl in the combustion chamber for additional power. Exhaust valve timing is changed as well.

Visually the K1300S bears little change to its predecessor.

Via a 1mm larger bore (80mm) and 5.3mm longer stroke (64.3mm), the engine now sits at 1293cc. Inside these tubes sit new, lighter pistons, shedding 12 grams and featuring shorter skirts with thinner rings. All-new engine mapping is designed to smooth out the execution of partial-load situations, while the throttle now features both open and close cables for improved precision.

This is an area in which we had major concern the first time we rode the pre-production 1200S. The machine would continue to accelerate after the throttle was closed at certain rpm. Extremely unnerving. This was updated some on the production 1200S, but it still had its issues. As for the 1300, BMW has done its homework and it is head and shoulders better. We did notice a slight hesitation right around 5000rpm when twisting the grip past one-third throttle with any kind of haste. BMW’s PR team didn’t have an answer for the issue, but we would guess it has something to do with either the mechanical exhaust valve or new ram-air intake ducts. This aside, the fuel delivery is light years better than the old model.

Never ones to go the conventional route, BMW chose to equip its K sportbike with shaft drive right from the word go. But where the old system had issues, the new unit is completely updated. This system works quite well, with zero driveline lash as well as nearly no shudder or hopping during on-off throttle applications. This was improved on the new machine by creating a two-stage damping system. Stage one is made up of a spring and friction disc, similar to a limited-slip clutch, while stage two consists of a polyurethane bushing system, using an array of different-hardness pieces to absorb additional backlash or chatter. This all equals much smoother drive shaft actuation and little to no wheel hop in nearly all situations.

The K1300S Duolever front suspension provides improved front end feel, but the BMW proprietary components still feel different than a conventional sportbike fork.

When the roads got twisty and the pace increased, another one of the major complaints we had with the 1200 was a lack of front end feel. In fact, this seemed to be a common complaint among most all of the two-wheeled sporting press. So, BMW addressed it. Some of this is a result of the unconventional Duolever front suspension. One of the byproducts of the system is a lack of front end dive when braking, which is come cases is a good thing, though it limits the rider’s connection with the road. To change this, one of the levers (they wouldn't say which one, but we are guessing the bottom) in the system was shortened in ever so slightly length and lightened, allowing the front end a limited amount of dive, aimed to give the rider more connection with the pavement. Firmer spring rates front and rear further aid this cause.

While this no doubt helped, it's only a small step in the right direction. The K-ride still lacks the feedback an aggressive sport or track rider needs to push anywhere near the limit; this is not a track bike, plain and simple. On the other hand, one of the positives of the Duolever/Paralever setup is an uncanny amount of stability. Diving well into triple digit speeds proved to be a thing of beauty, with the bike most happy cruising along at well over 140mph. Only problem? Keeping one’s driver’s license at those speeds in America. This bike begs to go fast and is no doubt built for the Autobahn.

Suspension adjustability. We all want it, but how many of us truly know what to do with all those clickers? Do I add more rebound or give it less compression? Do I change the spring preload or stick to only the damping? Unless you have a vast amount of track experience and are versed in this black magic, chances are you could do more harm than good when turning those knobs. BMW realized this and instituted their ESA II - Electronic Suspension Adjustment - system. This is an available option, like it was in the previous model, only now the second version of the system has been updated for more adjustability on the fly. Featuring nine total modes, the shock now changes damping, spring rate and spring preload, all at the touch of a button.

We found Sport mode to be a overly stiff and somewhat jarring, opting for the Normal setting most of the time. Comfort mode aided in making long distance freeway riding more bearable on one’s rear end, thus we tended to fall back on it when the miles racked up.

Our model was equipped with their Premium package, which also included ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes) and ASC (Anti-Spin Control). The ABS system is far improved over the previous model, eliminating a good deal of the pulsation felt through both the hand and foot levers. As for the ASC, we weren’t quite as fond of it. It was very abrupt when kicking in and limited the fun quotient by not allowing skyward lifting of the front wheel and various other antics. It was nice to be able to turn both systems off. ABS must be done when stopped by holding the marked switch down for four seconds, while ASC can be turned off on the fly by holding the same switch down for two seconds.

Also part of this package and equipped on our test unit was BMW’s “Gear Shift Assistant.” No, it’s not a mechanical foot that shifts for you. It’s what most know as a Quick Shifter, allowing for full-throttle clutchless up shifts. While the system works just fine, it’s not quite as quick as we would have liked for the $450 premium price tag. We found the bike could easily be shifted just as quick, if not quicker, by simply holding pressure on the lever with one’s foot and blipping the throttle - old school-style.

The handlebar switchgear is all-new too. At least for BMW that is ... The Bavarian marque calls the new traditional blinker system an “international standard” redesign. No more of its goofy one-on-each-side switches. Now it’s the same as every other bike in your garage and totally controlled with a left-side toggle switch. It looks like BMW’s German squad of engineers swallowed their pride to conform? Never thought I would see the day. Though, again, it shows their commitment to respond to U.S consumer requests.

Highway sweepers beg for Autobahn-like speeds thanks to the BMW K1300S Germanic heritage.

BMW now allows the consumer to choose their desired seat height when buying the machine, with two options available at no extra charge. Finally realizing not everyone is a six-foot-tall German, both a standard seat (32.2-inch height) as well as a low option (31.1-inch height) give riders of varying sizes options at no extra charge. For us the low option proved to be far better suited to my 5’7” frame.

As for styling, to the naked eye the 1300S looks almost identical to the 1200S. In reality they have made a host of changes in an effort to streamline the big machine. The fairing is now 18mm slimmer, has new side fairings and a black face split on the upper fairing headlight area to improve image. A revised speedo, tach and clear LED tail light round out the changes.

Available in Light Grey Metallic, Lava Orange Metallic and a Sapphire Black/Granite Gray/Magma Red combination as you read this. As for pricing, BMW has structured it like their car side, featuring a ‘base’ model, which retails for $15,250 and comes with heated grips standard. From there you can add options galore. And we mean galore. To streamline this process they have added a Premium pack, featuring the quick shifter, ESA II, heated grips, TPM (Tire Pressure Monitors) and ASC, which are what BMW says the majority of people opt for and what we rode. The multi-color paint scheme is an additional $650, plus a host of other accessories can be added by BMW.

After spending countless miles on the new K1300S, I must say, I do like the machine far better than the 1200. I like it cruising along at 140mph through fast sweepers while covering great distances in a short amount of time. No doubt this is a good motorcycle. The question is: How well does it fit in the United States market? Some serious personal restraint will be needed - if you want to keep you driver’s license, that is.

Price…….. Little costly compared to Pulsar 250cc… It could come somewhere around 1.30 L. Hope this bike captures the Indian roads soon. Just had a glance of few snaps of Taurus… Looks really sturdy.This is the first kind of bike in India that has disc brakes in rear wheel. The ambassador of the bike company and Bollywood star John Abraham visited the pavilion and had a look at the Yamaha VMAX which he also have it in his garage.

This is to be noted that the 2009 Yamaha VMAX with refreshed mill and other features was launched in India in September 2009. This is the third superbike followed by Yamaha YZF R1 and Yamaha MT-01. The iconic bike of Yamaha is powered by a 1679cc V4 engine which belts out a peak power of 200 PS at 9,000 rpm and churns a maximum torque of 166.8 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Yamaha to launch Yamaha SZ by February this year

Yamaha India plans to launch the recently displayed SZ model at the Auto Expo in India. As the rumors to be believed, the new SZ Model will be out in the 3rd week of February, yes you heard it right.

Yamaha SZ bike will sports the same 150cc engine which already doing its job in the FZ group of models.

Yamaha SZ will get conventional twin rear shocks and disc brakes in the front and will be priced at Rs 55000 to Rs 60000 (Ex, Showroom or On-Road Price).

Why Yamaha SZ at 150cc?

Yamaha wanted to give a break to its rival bikes including the Honda Unicorn, Bajaj Pulsar and the little boy Pulsar LS 135.

Yamaha India is reported to launch a bike in India by February this year. The new bike from Yamaha will be Yamaha SZ, the concept bike which was displayed at Delhi Auto Expo. The bike will be positioned in the FZ series segment of Yamaha. Yamaha SZ will sport 150cc engine which might produce the same power, torque figures and fuel economy. The bike likely to be priced between Rs 55,000 to Rs 60,000. The new Yamaha bike will be positioned against the likes of Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS and Honda Unicorn.

The bike is expected to have disc brakes, twin rear shock absorbers and FZ series like appearance. Yamaha India is also reported to launch a commuter bike in order to capture 10 per cent market share in India by launching new Yamaha bikes in India. The commuter bike to be launched is Yamaha YBR which was also showcased at Delhi Auto Expo 2010. The bike will be based on Yamaha Alba. According to initial reports, it may have the 1

06cc engine that powers Yamaha Alba, Yamaha G5 and Yamaha Crux. The refined engine is to give around 60-70 kmpl in city. It might have the price tag of Rs 45,000 in India. This commuter cum entry-level bike would be aimed to rural areas. However, these bikes will have to face tuff competition from Hero Honda Karizma ZMR and Hero Honda Splendor Plus.

Two of the most skillfully crafted models in the Dyna family, the Super Glide and Super Glide Custom carry on being produced as 2010 model years with little but significant changes and actually manage to look like being in a class of their own as they are long, refined and pretty much reduced to the very essence of riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in style.

The bikes will indeed go for the long haul, but there are no fancy on board systems such as a GPS, radar detector or anything like that. On this thing it’s just rider and machine, pure passion and the open road, all for $12 respectively $13 grand.

Introduction

Harley-Davidson builds the two Dyna models around the very same engine, a massive torque providing air-cooled, Twin Cam displacing 96 cubic inches and which, fed through an electronic sequential port fuel injection system, develops 92 ft lbs of torque from as low as 3,000 rpm.

Looking good down the boulevard and riding economical down the highway is the perfect balance that the simple and custom Super Glide models achieve as both represent the original American style without the original fuel consumption. Now, thanks to the six-speed Cruise Drive transmission that Harley fits on the bikes, claimed highway mpg is 54 and taking in consideration the 4.8 gallons tank capacity (5.0 gallons on the Custom model) too, traveling range is excellent.

The seats are both positioned at no more than 27.0 inches from the ground despite the fact that the Dyna Super Glide has a solo seat and the Dyna Super Glide Custom a passenger seat too and both models come with mid-mount foot controls, but while the simple base model comes with low-rise handles, the Custom one features mini pullback handlebar. That would be a first difference. The other and most striking one is the wheel style – cast aluminum ones on the simple Dyna and chrome laced steel ones on the Custom. In both cases, we’re dealing with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels.

Once again, Harley-Davidson builds virtually the same bike in slightly different styles and shows how big of a difference can a pair of wheels and different paintjobs do to the numbers on the sales charts.

History

The FX Super Glide was first introduced in 1971 as a combination between the already existing FLH Electra Glide and XLH Sportster models. The bike had come to meet the demands of riders who simply couldn’t be satisfied with neither the Electra Glide nor the Sportster and who have always looked for means to blend the two styles by modifying the chassis. The bike carried on through the 1970s and in 1974 it got a much needed electric starter.

The early 1980s saw the introduction of the FXR Super Glide, a more refined version of the original as it featured lighter frame tubes and a rubber-mounted engine. A five-speed gearbox had come to replace the previous four-speed one.

Various models (FXDB Daytona, FXDC Dyna Glide Custom, FXRT Sport Glide, FXDL Dyna Low Rider, FXRS-Conv Convertible, FXRS-SP Low Rider Sport and FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide) were introduced through the 1990s and each one of those brought a major contribution to the overall evolution of the Dyna family.

2005 brought the Super Glide Custom and in 2007, the Twin Cam 88 engine was replaced by the Twin Cam 96.

Competition

Motorcycles such as the 2008 Honda VTX1800F, the 2009 Star Raider/Raider S and even the 2009 Suzuki Boulevard M90 seem to fade away when it comes to bikes manufactured by the maker which started it all. None of the Japanese builders will ever manage to offer this much diversity and the same riding feel as Harley does simply because they don’t go the same way back and aren’t dedicated to building cruisers only.

Exterior

Harley-Davidson motorcycles are first heard before they’re seen, but when it comes to this last part, things prove looking as good as they sound from the very simple reason that the American company has remained true to the style that consecrated it.

The 2009 Dyna Super Glide does feature a new low profile front fender and a wrap-around rear one, new fuel sender and graphics, but overall it looks like a modern interpretation of what Willie G. Davidson visualized when first designing the bike back in the early 1970s. The engine is powder coated and features chromed cylinder heads, the seat is a solo unit and the shorty exhaust pipes not only manage to stand out, but enhance the refined look of the bike. Also, on the Dyna Super Glide, we’re dealing with a discrete headlight and new silver-faced speedometer with range countdown. Color options are Vivid Black and Pewter Pearl.

Video: Max Neukirchner Escapes a Nasty Highside During the Portimao Superpole

Max Neukirchner was a unlucky (or is it lucky?) man this weekend while World Superbike made a race weekend at Portimao. While racing during the Superpole event at the Portugese track, the German rider found himself and his Ten Kate Honda on the wrong end of a nasty highside. Cresting over the hill, you can see Neukirchner spin like a top, while his Honda CBR gets its rear wheel crushed. As you’ll see in the video after the jump, Neukirchner came out of the crash relatively unscathed, and was able to start Race 1 at Portimao.

Video: Bimota Moto2 Racer Caught Lapping

With the officially unveiling of the 2010 Moto2 race bikes still a few weeks away, a video of Bimota’s Moto2 entry has found its way onto the internet. With the Italian firm linked to a couple other Moto2 chassis, this race bike will be the first officially supported racing effort from Bimota in nearly 10 years. The video, found on YouTube, shows the bike sitting still and taking laps at Binetto race track near Bari, Italy. Check it out after the jump.

Bimota announced back in February that they’d likely enter into the Moto2 series, either as a chassis designer or as a racing team. It seems both those options have been tapped, as FB Corse will likely run a Bimota designed chassis in addition to Bimota’s own racing effort.

As u all know that there was already a discussion on the same topic that generated quite a lot of heat, i have decided to give my unbiased review on the same. Lets start over quickly with some of the key points.

Styling and Design: About styling and design being subjective and all, there is for once a clear winner here. The Yamaha FZ16’s very existence began with the styling package so there’s no surprise that it trumps the rather well-proportioned, but diminutive TVS Apache RTR-FI.

From the sculpted tank (cover) to the fat tyres, the FZ drips style that begs for some serious attention.

The RTR-FI for its part, is hardly what you would call plain jane. The bold middle stripe, extroverted tank extensions and compact package looks good. But thing is, they’ve been in the market for a while and familiarity breeds, well, less points. In fit and finish terms, the Yamaha is ahead as well. TVS has never been remiss on this front and I have to say, the RTR-FI is no exception. But, the Japanese bike is noticeably better.

Engine and Performance: Let’s get refinement out of the way first. The Yamaha is, by miles the more refined engine. The RTR-FI is astonishingly throaty, but the Yamaha is quietly gruff as well. But it’s in the vibration department that the Yamaha creams the TVS. But on the performance front, there is no contest as Yamaha always intended for the FZ 16 to be a torquey street bike and it shows. Get to 7,500rpm and the game’s up. There isn’t much power left. Cruise the torque and the FZ is remarkably quick through traffic and will hold a nice 80kph cruise down the highway. You could sit for aeon’s on the throttle and get a much higher top speed in theory, but it’s a waste of time. The TVS, though, aims for glory. The motor is as gung ho as a horny rooster in a fecund hen house and it wastes no time letting you know this. From idle, the motor urges you to keep revving ever harder. And it rewards you with, first, loads of torque and then with a head rush of small cube horsepower. 15.5PS is a lot to ask from such a small motor, but the TVS is genuinely fast. Essentially, while comparable on price and displacement, these two motorcycles are night and day in feel. The Yamaha is competent, calm and classy. The TVS is urgent, powerful and sassy. Pick the character that you like more, and you’ll be happy. Check out the specs. You will notice that the RTR-FI is half-second quicker to 60, nearly 3.50 seconds quicker to 100, 0.9 seconds quicker over the quarter mile, 7kph quicker at the top. And, ridden steadily, It also returns nearly 13kpl more than the Yamaha.

Dynamics: Having calmly given up the engine points to the TVS, the Yamaha claws back into contention on the dynamics front. Wearing the fattest tyres on any Indian motorcycle at the moment and that too tubeless radials, the FZ has superb handling abilities. Yamaha have chosen to nanny you with peg feelers the size of your ballpoint pen. But remove them and you get a machine that is happy to lean over till hard stuff decks out. It isn’t a particularly agile motorcycle, but it is responsive, stable, confident and at ease. Superwide handlebars offer you leverage to change your lines and the Yamaha feels great to corner. Until those silly-long pegfeelers grind down. The Apache, on the other hand, is an ex-racebike. It’s nimble to the point of twitchy, stable but will scare you a bit in bumpy corners. Has relatively good cornering clearance, but will encourage you to consume all of it. And has a stiff suspension tune that makes no bones about favouring handling over comfort. On the ride quality front, I’d say the Yamaha was ahead, but only marginally. Neither machine here flatters the comfort-end of the equation. Backing the Yamaha off from the pre-load collar, does, however, add a smidgen of suppleness. That said, in almost every situation, you will find that Yamaha just a little more composed. On the braking front, the RTR-FI produces quicker stops. But it is the Yamaha that returns more feel. That the Yamaha’s tyres are grippier is clear in riding. Again, the dichotomy is rooted in their character. The Yamaha can, but would you really go apex hunting on it? The RTR definitely can.

Features: I’m now genuinely scared of writing long passages on this front. You see, features are supposed to be the frills, the garnish, the accompaniments. But somehow, Indian motorcyclists tend to regards them as the end-all and be-all of purchasing. For what its worth, the RTR has an analog tacho, the FZ has a fully digital setup. The latter can be a bit hard to read in the sun. Everything else is, roughly, the same.

Price: Ooh, that’s close. The RTR-FI (Rs 76600 on-road MumbaI) is actually just Rs 1687 more than the FZ (Rs 74913 on-road Mumbai). So, which will it be. Just to explain. The RTR-FI’s price is boosted by two things, the fuel injection and the rear disc brake. In all other aspects, it’s the same motorcycle as the regular carb version RTR. Of course, there’s a half bhp power gain. The FZ’s price, again, about Rs 6,000 more than the peer 150s, is at a premium. Yamaha have traditionally claimed premium pricing and say the price is high thanks to the higher spec – tubeless radials, digital meters etc.

Price Score: Yamaha FZ 16-0 TVS Apache RTR FI-1

Verdict: As Ive tried to bring out through the test, the motorcycles vary widely in character and feel. In my mind, there’s only a very minor overlap between the two. As in, you will either like the FZ or the RTR-FI, but the chances of you being stuck between the two is unlikely. If you are in that spot, my guess is you haven’t gone for a test ride yet. Do that at the earliest. Personally, while I’d love to pick the RTR-FI over the FZ, I find that I cannot. Having ridden both extensively on the road as well as the track, I find the FZ may (always) be slower than the urgent TVS, but it has a calm, sorted feel that makes the RTR-FI feel, a bit crude. Personally, I’d take the Yamaha. But, again, if out and out performance is what turns you on, blind-eye the Yamaha and pick the Apache.

Suzuki to Launch Lanza 150cc Soon!

Mr. Atul Gupta, the vice-president of sales and marketing of Suzuki revealed the fact that the company will launch a 150cc premium bike within March 2009. The new bike will be named Lanza and it is estimated to have atleast a power of 15bhp. Lanza will compete with other high end bikes in India and hence will be equipped with 6 speed gear box and digital consoles.

Just like Yamaha cloned the design of R1 and introduced as R15… there is a good chance that Suzuki will clone it’s higher end model which is successful in foreign countries. Here is a picture of Suzuki higher end Lanza R G5x.
